Searching for Truth
Genesis 1, Romans 1
The lost man who searches for truth will find it. But the lost man who only searches for evidence remains lost. Instead of searching for truth, the lost man searches only for evidence. But evidence of what? Of whatever he wants to find. So he remains lost. And the lost man doesn’t find the evidence for which he searches. There’s three reasons for this:
1. He looks for the wrong thing.
2. He looks in the wrong places.
3. He looks with a wrong heart.
If your heart is wrong, you don’t want to find just any truth, you only want to find YOUR truth. You don’t want all truth, just selective truth. And it’s a sure way to miss the truth. [Romans 1 – suppressing the truth]
Wrong things man looks for:
Proof of evolution
Aliens
Sinful things
Right things man looks for:
God
Happiness
Life
Wrong places man looks:
Dark arts
Drugs and alcohol
Sinful things
Mars
How is man’s heart wrong?
Searching but not seeking. You only find what you truly search for. But when you seek you are open to whatever may be found. When you really want to find God you will. He isn’t hiding. He wants to be found.
It matters not how smart you are. You won’t find the truth if you aren’t open to any and all truth. Today’s science not only isn’t looking for God, it has a heart to kill God.
Evolution tries to make man just another animal. And if so, then we can act on all our baser instincts and urges, and there is no standard of morality.
But only man was made in the image of God, to stand erect and look up for Him. Animals are conscious; they’re not self-conscious. That is, they react to their environment, but they don’t know they do. A lot is missing in the animals, such as reason, the ability to think abstractly, which animals cannot do. Such as appreciation for beauty and aesthetics. Such as feeling emotion. Such as being morally sensitive and morally aware and morally conscious. And here it is above all, above everything else – get this one: Above all, the image of God indicates the ability to personally relate to someone else, especially to God Himself. Being able to know Him, being able to love Him, being able to obey Him, being able to worship Him.
The core of the image of God can be summed up by the word “personal.” We are persons. We live and move on the basis of relationships. We understand fellowship. We understand love. We understand communion. We understand language and conversation. We understand sharing thoughts and sharing attitudes and sharing ideas and sharing experiences with others. And that is why when God created man, He immediately said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Why? Because the image of God is personhood, and personhood can only function in relationship.
God Himself has never existed as a single, lonely, solitary, isolated individual. He has always existed in a family. He is the Father. The second member is the Son. The third member is the Spirit.
But if I’m an animal, I’m not even conscious that I exist. How can I be conscious that anybody else does? But I am a person and I know I exist and I know you exist and I know God exists, and so do the proclaimed atheists.
I know right from wrong. I understand virtue. I understand morality. I understand righteousness. I understand sin. I understand holiness. I understand disobedience and rebellion. I have the capacity to do what is right. I have the capacity to do what is wrong. I have a capacity for holy and loving fellowship with my heavenly Father.
It is true that as a human being, I resemble the creatures in my physical, corporeal form. I am made up of flesh, I am made up of the same components, I am made up of the same atomic material, the same raw elements. But what makes me distinct is my invisible part. It’s the part that you can’t find in my DNA. It’s the part that’s not in the chromosomes. It’s that invisible self, it’s that true person that makes me capable of relationship.
God has caused us to stand up so that we can face each other and so that we can look up and face Him. We are capable of facial expressions corresponding to emotional feelings and with a brain and a tongue capable of articulate speech. God knew that in the fullness of time, even He would become a man. And in that day, He would prepare a human body for His Son, and it would be made in the likeness of men, just as man had been made in the likeness of God.
Science can’t explain these things, just like they can’t explain so much of God’s amazing creation.
Turtles swim the oceans worldwide and yet still know how to return to where they were born. The same is true for many sea creatures. How do they know? You and I certainly couldn’t do the same. Birds navigate by the stars when migrating. How do they know how to do that? In fact, birds raised from eggs inside a building where they have never seen the sky can orient themselves toward home when shown an artificial sky representing a place they’ve never been. Who put that into them?
Moths have two ears. Mites, little microscopic bugs, like to live in a moth’s ear. But interestingly enough, mites occupy only one ear of a moth. If mites get in both ears, the moth can’t fly, so scientists find mites only in one ear. How do the mites know that one ear is occupied? And why would they care?
And then the fascinating Bombardier beetle has two chemicals in his little body which mix perfectly and at the right moment combine outside his body. When they’re fired and they intersect, they explode in the face of the enemy. That’s why they’re called Bombardier beetles. However, the two chemicals that create an explosion outside the body, never combine prematurely to blow up the beetle. And by the way, how did the beetle evolve those explosives and keep them separate?
Storms in operation at any time expend energy at the inconceivable figure of one billion, three hundred million horsepower. Where does that come from? The average farmer is provided, free of charge, over 400,000 gallons of water per acre per year on average. Where does all this power come from?
Scientists can’t figure out how there’s immense energy in a vacuum. They call it dark energy. I call it God!
The U.S. Natural Museum says there are over 10 million different species of insects. There are 2,500 kinds of ants. I know, they were all at your last picnic. One colony of ants can have as many as 100 million ants. How do those little tiny things have such a reproductive system? The codfish can lay nine million eggs. I don’t have any other comment, just that is enough to stagger me.
The Earth weighs 6,586 sextillion tons, hangs in empty space, spins at 1,000 miles an hour with perfect balance. At the same time that it’s spinning at 1,000 miles an hour, it is moving through space around the sun at 1,000 miles a minute. It does so at a perfect angle set to create the seasons, which provide all the crops which feed its inhabitants.
Consider things that are very small, like the atom. They’re not visible. We know they exist, but to this day they’re not visible. Atoms are so small it takes three atoms to make up one water molecule, and if you were to take every water molecule in one drop of water and blow them up so that each molecule was the size of a grain of sand, you would have enough grains of sand to make a road one foot thick, one-half mile wide that would go from L.A. to New York City. That’s how many molecules in a drop of water and there’s three atoms in every molecule. And yet the atom is mostly empty space. The actual material in the atom takes up only one trillionth of the atom’s volume and when atoms combine they only join together at their outer electron orbit, that’s all. What makes matter seem solid are the motions within the atoms.
This is not really solid. Everything is mostly empty space. If the average person had all the space squeezed out of them, how much volume do you think you’d occupy? If you had all the space squeezed out of you, you’d be lost on the head of a pin for you could only occupy 1/100,000,000 of a cubic inch. So when somebody comes along and says you’re nothing, they’re right. But on the other hand I’m thinking it’s a great diet. Did this all happen by accident? Come on.
And yet all that pales by comparison to man, the apex of God’s creation. Your heart, about the size of your fist, weighs less than half a pound, pumps 1,800-plus gallons of blood a day, does enough work in 12 hours to lift 65 tons off the ground. It’s by God’s grace that our heart keeps going so long. And He even allows the heart of the evolutionist to keep beating. He hopes that in time they will open their mind to the truth. Speaking of their mind, they think they are so smart, and they are, for they have a human brain. It just needs to be open to the truth. So now we’re back to their heart problem.
Your brain has about 100,000 billion electrical connections. 10 to the 14th power. In fact, your brain has more electrical connections than all the electrical appliances on the face of the earth, yet your brain fits in a quart jar and operates for 70-100 years on 10 watts of power fueled largely by cheeseburgers and French Fries. To be an evolutionist is the height of stupidity, is it not?
(Psalm 139:14) says, “We were fearfully and wonderfully made.”
